Featured in Voyage Houston: Why I Said Yes to Sharing Our Story

This week, Voyage Houston published a feature about my journey—how my passion shifted from 15 years in law into building science and founding Conscious Healthy Home—and I've received so many kind messages from people who connected with the story.

Several of you have asked why I chose to share something so personal—our family's experience with toxic mold, the health challenges my children faced, the crisis that upended everything I thought I knew about success.

Here's why I said yes.

Because Vulnerability Creates Permission

When I was in the depths of our mold crisis, I felt completely alone. I couldn't find resources that made sense. I couldn't find professionals who spoke a language I understood. I couldn't find anyone who had walked this path and come out the other side.

I needed someone to say: "I know exactly what you're going through. I've been where you are. And you're going to be okay."

When God led me to just one person who was able to say that to me, I knew I had to also be able to say it to others.

By sharing our story, I'm giving other families permission to acknowledge their own struggles without shame. I'm showing them that crisis doesn't mean failure—it can mean redirection.

And I'm proving that you can transform your greatest pain into your most meaningful work.

Because the "Why" Matters More Than the "What"

Anyone can list credentials. Certified Passive House Builder. Building Biology Advocate. WELL AP candidate. Air Advisory member for the International WELL Building Institute.

But credentials don't tell you why I do this work. They don't tell you why I care so deeply about empowering people with knowledge instead of keeping them dependent on experts. They don't tell you why I'm so committed to building infrastructure that makes healthy homes accessible to everyone, not just the wealthy.

The Voyage Houston feature allowed me to connect the dots between my legal background, my building science expertise, and my lived experience in a way that helps people understand: this isn't just a business.

It's a calling.

Because Representation Matters

I want other women to see what's possible.

You can discover new passions that lead you in unexpected directions.

You can shift focus at midlife and become an expert in a completely different field.

You can take your skills from one discipline and apply them brilliantly in another.

You can turn your family's worst experience into someone else's solution.

You can build multiple businesses, serve on influential advisory boards, create certification programs that change industries—and you don't need anyone's permission to do it.

I want women reading that article to think: "I can too."

Because Stories Build Connection

Here's something I learned as an attorney: facts inform, but stories connect.

I could tell you that Conscious Healthy Home provides expert consulting for individuals, remediations/renovations/retrofits, and real estate professionals. That's factually accurate.

But when I tell you that our family's crisis gave me empathy, expertise, and a mission I never would have discovered otherwise—that connects us in a way facts alone never could.

People don't hire consultants because of credentials. They hire consultants because they believe that person understands their situation and can genuinely help them.

Sharing my story creates that connection; it waives the flag that says—I’m here, I’m resourced, and I UNDERSTAND.

Key Takeaways from the Voyage Houston Feature

If you read the Voyage Houston feature, here's what I hope stays with you:

Your crisis can become your calling. What feels like the worst thing that's ever happened to you might be redirecting you toward the work you were always meant to do.

You don't need permission. I didn't wait to feel ready. I didn't wait for an invitation. I decided, and then I executed. You can too.

Nothing is too great. Not for me. Not for you. Not for anyone willing to do the uncomfortable work of becoming whoever they need to be to fulfill their purpose.

Everyone is capable. You're capable of making informed decisions about your home. You're capable of learning building science. You're capable of creating an environment that supports your family's health. You just need the right support.

The Work Continues

Being featured in Voyage Houston is an honor, but it's not the destination—it's a milestone on a much longer journey.

We're still building. Still learning. Still growing.

We're training real estate professionals to serve the $912 billion wellness real estate market with confidence and competence.

We're consulting with families who refuse to stay powerless about their home environment.

We're supporting people undertaking remediations, renovations, and retrofits who want a systems-minded approach.

And we're doing it all with the firm belief that healthy homes should be accessible to everyone—not just those who can afford high-end consultants or already know the right questions to ask.

If you've been part of this journey, thank you. Your support, your trust, your encouragement—it all matters more than you know.

And if you're just discovering Conscious Healthy Home through this feature, welcome. I'm glad you're here.
