Honored to Join the IWBI Air Advisory: Advancing Healthy Buildings from Homes to Organizations

A Personal Journey Comes Full Circle

When toxic mold turned our family's dream home into a health nightmare years ago, I never imagined that experience would lead me here: invited to serve as an advisor for the International WELL Building Institute's (IWBI) Air Advisory Committee.

This isn't just a professional milestone—it's a full-circle moment that connects everything I've learned through lived experience, technical expertise, and years of helping families and organizations create healthier spaces.

What is the IWBI Air Advisory?

The IWBI Air Advisory is one of ten specialized concept advisories that shape the evolution of the WELL Building Standard—the world's leading framework for designing, building, and operating spaces that prioritize human health and wellbeing.

As an Air Advisory member, I'll work alongside leading global experts in indoor air quality, public health, building science, and medical research to:

  • Develop and refine air quality features within the WELL v2 Building Standard

  • Ensure evidence-based strategies align with the latest research on indoor environmental quality

  • Guide implementation of practical, effective air quality interventions

  • Advance health equity by making healthy indoor air accessible across diverse building types and communities

The Air concept within WELL addresses critical indoor air quality parameters including:

  • PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

  • Carbon dioxide and ventilation effectiveness

  • Humidity control and mold prevention

  • Source elimination and material selection

With WELL now spanning over 6 billion square feet globally across 130+ countries and supporting approximately 30 million occupants, the work of the Air Advisory directly impacts millions of lives.

Why This Matters for Conscious Healthy Home

At Conscious Healthy Home, I've walked alongside families dealing with the devastating impacts of poor indoor air quality—from mold illness to asthma triggers to unexplained health symptoms that doctors couldn't diagnose.

My work on the Air Advisory directly enhances my ability to serve these families by:

Bringing Cutting-Edge Research to Residential Applications

The advisory provides early access to emerging research and best practices that I can immediately translate into actionable guidance for homeowners. Whether you're dealing with mold remediation, building a new home, or simply want to breathe easier, the insights from WELL's research-backed approach inform every recommendation I make.

Bridging the Gap Between Commercial Standards and Home Health

While WELL has historically focused on commercial buildings, the WELL for Residential program is experiencing phenomenal growth. My participation ensures that the unique challenges of home environments—where families spend the majority of their time—are represented in standard development.

Elevating the Healthy Home Movement

By participating in the development of globally-recognized indoor air quality standards, I can help raise the bar for what "healthy home" really means.

This benefits not just my direct clients but the entire industry, including the realtors I train through the CHH Realtor Certification program to recognize and market healthy homes.

Advancing Conscious Consulting Group's Mission

For organizations working with Conscious Consulting Group, this advisory role brings even more value to our workplace and school environment consulting:

Direct Influence on WELL Certification Standards

When I help organizations pursue WELL Certification, I'm not just interpreting the standard—I'm participating in its development. This means:

  • Strategic advantage in understanding upcoming changes and requirements

  • Deeper expertise in optimizing air quality features for maximum point achievement

  • Insider knowledge of compliance pathways and performance verification

Supporting ESG and Sustainability Goals

With my background as a licensed attorney with ESG expertise and now as an Air Advisory Advisor, I bring a unique dual perspective on regulatory compliance and voluntary health standards. Organizations can confidently integrate indoor air quality improvements into their environmental, social, and governance strategies.

Evidence-Based Solutions for High-Performance Buildings

The advisory work ensures every recommendation I make is grounded in the latest scientific research on how indoor air quality impacts:

  • Employee productivity (up to 15% improvement documented)

  • Student learning performance and academic outcomes

  • Attraction and retention of top talent

  • Absenteeism reduction and healthcare cost savings

  • Organizational resilience and business continuity

The Intersection of Law, Building Science, and Public Health

What makes this advisory role particularly meaningful is how it brings together my diverse background:

As a Certified Passive House Builder, I understand building physics and how to create high-performance envelopes that control moisture and maintain air quality.

As a Building Biology Advocate, I appreciate the holistic relationship between buildings and human health.

As an attorney with 15 years of experience in ESG, sustainability, and governance, I bring a risk management and compliance perspective that's often missing from purely technical discussions.

As someone who lived through mold illness, I bring empathy and real-world understanding of how devastating poor indoor air quality can be—and how life-changing good air quality is.

What This Means for You

Whether you're a homeowner concerned about your family's health or a decision-maker responsible for organizational wellness, my participation in the IWBI Air Advisory means you benefit from:

  1. Access to world-class expertise - The advisory includes renowned experts from academia, industry, government agencies, and medical research across nearly 40 countries

  2. Evidence-based recommendations - Every strategy I propose is backed by rigorous scientific research and peer-reviewed studies

  3. Practical, implementable solutions - Advisory work focuses on interventions that are not just theoretically sound but actually achievable

  4. Forward-thinking guidance - Insights into where healthy building standards are heading, so you can make future-proof investments

  5. Holistic perspective - Integration of technical requirements with human health outcomes, legal compliance, and financial performance

Indoor Air Quality: The Foundation of Healthy Spaces

The Air concept isn't just one of ten WELL concepts—it's foundational to everything else.

You can have perfect lighting, optimal thermal comfort, and thoughtful nourishment programs, but if people are breathing contaminated air, none of it matters.

Poor indoor air quality contributes to:

  • Respiratory illnesses and asthma

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Cognitive impairment and reduced productivity

  • Sick Building Syndrome

  • Chronic inflammation and immune dysfunction

Conversely, optimized indoor air quality delivers:

  • Improved cognitive function - Better decision-making and problem-solving

  • Enhanced productivity - Documented improvements of 8-15%

  • Reduced absenteeism - Fewer sick days and health-related absences

  • Better sleep quality - Critical for recovery and performance

  • Long-term health protection - Reduced disease risk over a lifetime

Looking Forward: The Future of Healthy Buildings

The $912.6 billion wellness real estate market isn't just growing—it's transforming.

Organizations and families increasingly recognize that the spaces we inhabit fundamentally impact our health, performance, and quality of life.

Through my work on the Air Advisory, I'm helping shape the standards that will define healthy buildings for years to come. But more importantly, I'm ensuring those standards are:

  • Accessible across different building types and economic contexts

  • Equitable in promoting health for all occupants

  • Actionable for practitioners implementing them

  • Impactful in delivering measurable health outcomes

Join the Healthy Building Movement

Whether you're struggling with mold, planning a renovation, pursuing WELL certification for your workplace, or optimizing your school's learning environment, there's never been a better time to prioritize indoor air quality.

My participation in the IWBI Air Advisory enhances the services available through both Conscious Healthy Home and Conscious Consulting Group, ensuring you receive guidance that's not just current but cutting-edge.
